Personalised prints are one of the few gifts that stay on display. Here is how to choose one — by occasion, by relationship, by what you actually want to say.

New baby

The first gift for the new room.

A name print ordered before the baby arrives goes straight up when they come home. It is one of the quickest ways to make a plain white nursery feel like it belongs to a specific person rather than a show flat. Parents do not always have the time to sort the walls themselves in the first few weeks — a ready-to-hang framed print is genuinely useful, not just decorative.

The most popular new baby prints are: the birth announcement layout (name, date of birth, weight, length, time) in a clean typographic style; the large name print in pastel block lettering; and the illustrated alphabet print for a slightly older child's room. All three are available framed in white or black, ready to hand over at the hospital or the front door.

For size: A3 works well above a shelf or beside a cot. A2 is the right size above the cot as a focal point. A1 suits a larger nursery or a feature wall. If you are buying as a gift and do not know the room, A2 is almost always right.

Birthdays

A birthday they actually remember.

The prints that get ordered for birthdays split into two categories. The first is the landmark number: a large-format print of the age (18, 21, 30, 40, 50, 60) set in very large condensed type, sometimes with the birth year or a short line underneath. These work because they mark the occasion directly, and they go on the wall of the person's home as a record of the year.

The second category is the quote or phrase — something that means something to the person turning a certain age. A line they have said a hundred times. A lyric from the song that was playing when they met their partner. A quote from the book that changed how they think. The studio sets this in large bold type at whatever size suits the room: A3 for a desk or small wall, A1 for a hallway or living room statement.

For children's birthdays, illustrated name prints and character alphabet posters are the standard choice — bright, bold, and specific to the child in a way a generic shop-bought poster cannot be. A printed card is forgotten by Tuesday. A framed name print stays on the wall until they leave for university, and sometimes beyond.

Weddings & anniversaries

The date that starts everything.

Wedding date prints are the most enduring thing a couple buys for their new home together. A well-designed print with the date, the venue location, and both names takes thirty seconds to read and works on any wall for thirty years. The studio keeps the design clean and typographic — a well-chosen typeface, the right size numerals, enough white space. No clipart, no script flourishes, no decorative elements that will look dated in five years.

Popular wedding print formats: the large-date layout (day, month, year in large numerals with the names underneath); the location print (venue town or city in large type with the date below); and the names-and-date print (both names on one line, the date on the next, repeated in a grid pattern). These suit A2 and A3 most naturally — large enough to be a feature but not so large that they overwhelm a bedroom or hallway.

For anniversaries: the studio can reproduce a couple's original wedding print in a new size, add the number of years, or create a companion piece — matching the original design but with the anniversary year added. First anniversary, fifth, tenth, twenty-fifth, fiftieth. The studio keeps records of previous orders and can re-run the same design at any point.

New home & keepsakes

The print that makes it theirs.

A new home print is one of the genuinely useful housewarming gifts because it fills a specific gap: the walls are bare, the owners have boxes to unpack, and the last thing they need is another set of kitchen towels. A framed print arrives ready to hang, specific to their address or the name of their house, and it goes straight up on the wall while everything else is still in boxes.

The studio's new home range includes: the house name print (the name of the house or the street address in large type); the coordinates print (latitude and longitude of the address); the map-origin print (the town or village the owners moved from, paired with the new address); and the year-of-move print (the year the family bought the house in very large numerals). All work in A3 or A2 for a hallway or living room, and in A4 for a study or kitchen shelf.

Personalised keepsakes

Beyond the big occasions, the studio makes prints for smaller but no less significant moments: a retirement date and a short list of years served; a pet's name and a line about what they were like; a memorial print for someone who died, with the dates and a short phrase they used. These are the prints people order quietly, without putting them on a list, because they know exactly what they want and they want it done properly.

How to choose

A few rules of thumb.

If you are not sure which print to order, these questions usually sort it quickly.

Who is the print for?

A child's room wants something colourful and large with their name prominent. An adult's living room usually wants something clean and typographic. A couple's bedroom or hallway suits a date print or a quote that belongs to them specifically. A new home gets a location or address print. Start with the person and the room, not the product.

What size does the wall need?

Measure the space before ordering if you can. A print that is too small looks lost on a large wall. A print that is too large crowds the room. As a rough guide: A4 and A3 suit shelves, smaller walls, and gallery arrangements. A2 is the right size for most bedroom focal points. A1 suits living room statement walls and large nurseries. A0 is for rooms where you want the print to do all the talking.

Framed or unframed?

If it is a gift, order it framed. The recipient does not have to source a matching frame, and you know it looks exactly right when they open it. If you are ordering for yourself and you have a specific frame in mind, order unframed. The print will arrive flat-packed in a rigid board envelope and fit any standard ISO frame.

How long does it take?

The studio aims to send a proof within one working day of receiving the order details. Once the proof is approved, printing and dispatch typically takes two working days. First-class Royal Mail delivery adds one to two days on top of that. For most orders in the UK, five to six working days from order to door is a reasonable expectation. If there is a deadline (a birthday, a birth, a wedding) tell the studio at the time of ordering and the timeline will be confirmed before production starts.

Got an occasion in mind?
